This program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, is an initiative recommended by the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. From Nov. 3 to Dec. 12, the challenge was taken by more than 75,000 high school students. The following Waubonsie Valley students participating in the National Financial Literacy Challenge scored in the top 25th percentile of the nation's scores: Akash R. Amin; Chris J. Blake; Clint D. Brown; Jeffrey R. Brown; Robert J. Burkhardt; Megan Coley; Matthew D. Deboer; Kelly N. Deking; Cole T. Eisses; Ivan A. Flores; Andrew D. Hummel; Trevor B. Kay; Kevin Kirchner; Avni B. Kothari; Pierce R. Lueders; Michael J. Lyons; Nick W. Niemi; Poojith Padmaraj; Taylor N. Patton-Gentert; Timothy B. Stephenson; Jonathan R. Strauss; and Sathish Suresh. In addition, students scoring in the top one percentile qualify for the National Financial Literacy Award. Fewer than 400 students nationwide received this award. Three Waubonsie Valley students earned this distinction: Robert J. Burkhardt; Matthew D. DeBoer; and Andrew D. Hummel. The Waubonsie Valley students participating in the challenge are enrolled in the finance course offered through the school's Business Education Department.
