Cheerleaders show true sportsmanship
Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Upstate Eight Conference Cheerleading Competition at Streamwood High School.
I was there to watch my daughter compete with the Neuqua Valley Varsity Cheerleaders. During the course of the day, we were able to watch so many groups of amazing and talented athletes compete.
However, something occurred during the day that did not go unnoticed and should be applauded. It was something in the sports world that we see less and less of every year. It was sportsmanship!
Just as the Neuqua Valley cheerleaders were lining up and preparing to take the floor to compete, my 8-year-old daughter called to my attention a chant that was getting louder and louder from the other side of the gym.
From the bleachers opposite of us, the cheerleaders from Waubonsie Valley High School, who had already competed, began chanting, "Neuqua Power," a cheer that my daughter has heard many times before at Neuqua basketball games. The girls from WV continued cheering on our girls from Neuqua as they prepared to compete!
Not only was this a wonderful show of spirit and support from our district "rivals," but an amazing display of class and maturity! The cheerleaders, coaches, and families of Waubonsie Valley Cheer should be extremely proud of the type of program they are a part of. It was appreciated by all of our parents and cheerleaders, and more importantly, taught an 8-year-old little girl the true meaning of sportsmanship!
