Waubonsie girls compete in scholarship contest

Congratulations to Waubonsie Valley High School seniors Kelsey Koster and Brianna Zrinsky, who both competed April 4 in the Illinois Junior Miss Competition.
More than 600 senior girls applied to be part of this year's competition in Illinois, and two of the top 10 Illinois finalists attend Waubonsie Valley.
Brianna Zrinsky of Naperville found the contest on FastWeb, an Internet search engine for finding scholarships. She filled out a preliminary application online and was selected to attend a meeting in January for candidates.
Kelsey Koster of Aurora had a friend who had competed last year. She attended the contest to watch her friend and was impressed by the event. She decided to enter this year and also made it through the preliminary selection process.
"This is not a beauty pageant, because it is based on grades and everything you are," said Kelsey, who grew up attending District 204 schools. "Everything you do counts."
After the January meeting, the contestants all were required to complete a more extensive application with details about their academic and extracurricular activities. They also had to write a "Being Your Best Self Essay."
"I think the hardest is going to the interview," Brianna says. "You have to be up-to-date about world events and be able to give strong answers. I have been preparing for that part of the competition."
Stressing personal best is the basis for the Junior Miss Program. The contest promotes five standards: be healthy, be involved, be studious, be ambitious and be responsible.
The two girls joined seven others for the competition in Bolingbrook. The girls stayed with families in Bolingbrook for the week.
For the talent portion of the contest, each girl was given 90 seconds to impress the judges. Brianna played a piece by Bach on the flute. Kelsey sang "Leave the Pieces," a song by the Wreckers. Kelsey has been a member of the award-winning Waubonsie Valley Mixed Show Choir for four years.
"I thought this would be a good experience," said Brianna, who has attended District 204 schools for 10 years.
Kelsey is headed to University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in the fall to study nutrition. She has plans to become a doctor and is contemplating being a surgeon.
