I've been reading an article in the current Time Magazine about education standards. It can be seen online at www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1891468,00.html It seems crazy that we have NCLB (seriously flawed most would agree) and that the standards in each state are set differently. Why should that be? There is a related article about Education Secretary Arne Duncan at www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1891473,00.html In answer to the first question put to him in the article he says he thinks the school days is too short, the school week is too short and the school year is too short. Just as with ADK, I think there are kids whose home life is such that they would benefit from more time in school. Yet in many families I think the children would not benefit from more time in school... as they already are busy with challenging coursework and many extra-curriculars and family activities and these kids should not have to spend more time in school than they do already. Otherwise, he has a lot of good things to say.
