Co-chairmen Pam Roeske and Laurel Flinn recently accepted a $3,000 check from the Batavia Police Department to help plan a safe, alcohol-free event for this year's graduating seniors. "We especially need the money. More kids are going to prom this year," Roeske said. Last year, 400 students attended the post-prom festivities. The city has a policy that earmarks fines assessed on liquor license holders to alcohol and drug prevention educational programs. The post-prom committee receives a portion of those funds to help off-set their estimated $20,000 budget. The moms have been organizing the post-prom party for a combined 19 years. Roeske said this year prom-goers will be bused to the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago for the formal dance and afterward will board the bus and return to Batavia for a post-prom party at Funway Amusements. "As far as parents go, there is no driving, and it eliminates the need for house and hotel parties," Roeske said. "Kids don't want the night to end, so we try to provide an alternative for them," Flinn said. Prom is May 9.
