Geneva adjusts schedules, bus routes
May 27, 2009
By CHARLOTTE NORGAARD For The Beacon News
GENEVA -- The Board of Education on Monday approved school schedule and bus time changes for the 2010-2011 term that will save the district a minimum of $300,000.
The savings will come from a reduction in bus routes, which could result in even greater savings in the coming years.
All schools in the district will be affected by the new schedules, which will include morning bus drop-offs that are five minutes earlier at the elementary and high schools, and five minutes later at the middle schools.
The elementary school days, including kindergarten, will begin at 8 a.m. Students will also be picked up 15 minutes earlier at 2:15 p.m. Dismissal on half days will be 11:20 a.m.
Middle school students will start classes at 8:35 a.m., and will be dismissed at 3:24 p.m. Students will be dismissed at noon on half days.
Classes at Geneva High School will begin at 7:40, with the day ending at 2:45 p.m. Half day dismissal will be 11:05 a.m.
The combining of bus service for all schools will cut routes from 34 to 17. This will be done through double routing of the buses, so morning buses will also pick up students in the afternoon.
Kindergarten bus routes will be adjusted for additional savings.
In recent months, the district has been working to come up with ways to reduce costs to offset the loss of revenue due to delayed state funding, plus the drop in new-home construction and in the value of existing homes.
"I would like to commend the administration for their out-of-the-box thinking," said board member Kelly Nowak.
