Earlier this year, administrators asked employees to identify areas where budget cuts could be made without impacting educational quality. "We didn't want to risk the education of our students," Assistant Superintendent Donna Oberg said in presenting the district's preliminary budget. Cuts that are being suggested include $322,580 in building and department budgets; $70,000 in capital projects; $110,00 for energy efficiency; $50,000 for field trips; $54,000 for extra-curricular and committee stipends; $3,000 for professional development; $30,000 for student assessment; $50,000 for textbooks; and $325,000 for transportation. In another savings effort, the School Board has authorized leasing a multifunction school activity bus at $8,600 to be used to transport smaller groups of students to sporting events and other activities. The district's budget must be finalized by July for the upcoming school year.
