District 203 administrators getting 1.69 percent salary bump
By Melissa Jenco | Daily Herald 6/30/09
Most Naperville Unit District 203 administrators will receive about a 1.6 percent salary increase in the coming school year.
The bump is smaller than usual; most administrators received a 3.8 percent increase last year.
"While you absolutely need to at this time keep costs constrained, we also do have administrators who are in demand and you want to keep people who have been performing well and recognize their work," board member Suzyn Price said.
In addition to the 1.6 percent increase, a handful of administrators also received an extra $1,000 to $2,000 as a merit-based reward, bringing the average raise for returning administrators to 1.69 percent.
That figure doesn't include about a dozen administrators retiring between now and 2013 who are eligible for 6 percent annual increases per their contract.
Staffing costs make up 80 percent of the district's expenses. The total increase in administrator costs for the district, including new, returning and soon-to-be-retiring administrators, is 0.7 percent.
Teachers meanwhile, are under contract to receive 3.8 percent salary boosts in the coming school year.
District 203's 2009-10 operating budget is $217.5 million, a 2.45 percent increase over last year. That includes $1.7 million in federal stimulus money for special education that must be used in addition to current services.
The district's total budget, including facility improvements, will be about $274 million.
The school board voted to let taxpayers skip the first payment toward facility improvements, an average of about $80 per household. The average taxpayer will still see about a 4.1 percent increase on the school district's portion of their property tax bill under this budget, in line with the 2007 rate of inflation that caps the amount the district can request from taxpayers.
