DuPage/Kane Junior League formalwear drive scheduled
Daily Herald Staff Report 9/13/09
Each year, the Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties Inc. makes dreams come true for hundreds of modern-day Cinderellas at its annual "Cinderella's Closet" event. To build up inventory for the upcoming 2010 event, the group will be holding a "Dress and Accessory Drive" starting Monday, Sept. 14.
"Every girl deserves to feel like a princess at her prom and that is what Cinderella's Closet is all about," says league President Jeni Kahley. "Our goal is to provide every girl who comes in with a wonderful, unforgettable experience and to send her home with everything she needs to feel like a true princess on prom night."
For the past five years, this group of women from the western suburbs has dedicated itself to making prom not only a possibility, but a dream come true for financially challenged young women from throughout the Chicago area by providing them the opportunity to "shop" for dresses, jewelry, purses - all free of charge at this one-day-only formalwear boutique.
"All of the dresses and accessories available at Cinderella's Closet are donated by individuals or area companies," Kahley stated. "Thanks to the amazing support we receive from the local communities and businesses, we've been able to outfit hundreds of girls each year. But every year we need to replenish our inventory to get ready for the next year's event. We are always in need of dresses of all sizes. Purses, wraps, shoes and any other formal accessories are welcome as well. Last year, we received a surprise donation of more than $20,000 in jewelry from lia Sophia which was a huge hit with the girls who attended the boutique."
JLKD's Fall Dress and Accessory Drive will be held Monday through Oct. 9. Items being sought include: prom-style dresses of all sizes - especially newer, updated styles; jewelry/accessories; evening wraps; purses; hair accessories; and formal shoes - new or very gently worn.
All donations are tax deductible and items may be dropped off at any of the following locations:
• Aurora: First Centennial Mortgage, 2471 W. Sullivan Road
• Elburn: Town and Country Public Library, 320 E. North St.
• Downers Grove: Indian Boundary YMCA, 711 59th St.
• Geneva: DWS, 321 James St.
• Naperville: Northern Trust, 401 S. Main St.; Fry YMCA, 2120 W. 95th St.; and St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 2220 Lisson Road.
The sixth annual "Cinderella's Closet" event will be held next April.
