Popcorn fundraiser to benefit local Scouts, U.S. troops
Daily Herald 9/14/09
The Three Fires Council, Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Venture Crews have kicked off the annual Popcorn Sale. The council's annual unit fundraiser provides youth members the opportunity to earn money for camp, trips, activities and enables the customer to send popcorn directly to U.S. military personnel. The fundraiser can also help Scouts earn money to be applied to college scholarships.
The Scouts will again challenge local communities to show their support of American troops serving throughout the world with "Operation Popcorn." The program invites customers to donate the Trail's End popcorn treats to active duty troops and their families. In the last two years, more than 700 tons of popcorn treats were shipped to more than 600 locations around the world and more than 7 million pouches of microwave popcorn and 250,000 tins were delivered to U.S. troops.
"This is a great opportunity to support both the military and Scouts," said Matthew Ackerman, Scout Executive for the Three Fires Council. "The annual popcorn fundraiser teaches boys valuable life skills and instills a good work ethic that has positive rewards." "Developing organizational skills, presenting oneself along with the development of good business sense will also help Scouts as they become adults."
A variety of products will be available for purchase including microwaveable popcorn, trail mix, cheese popcorn, caramel popcorn and chocolate covered popcorn. The sale will run until Saturday, Nov. 7. For information on the Popcorn Sale, or to purchase popcorn, call the Three Fires Council Service Center at (630) 584-9250.
The Three Fires Council serves more than 36,000 youth throughout DuPage, Kane, Kendall, DeKalb, and parts of Will and Cook counties. Our mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Trail's End popcorn, sold through Boy Scouts as a fundraiser for local Scout Councils, is produced by Weaver Popcorn Company, one of the largest producers and manufacturers of popcorn products in the world. An 80-year-old, family-owned company, Weaver Popcorn distributes its products in more than 90 countries.
