Naperville salaries beat national average
October 20, 2009
By Katie Morell For The Sun
Salaries for finance, information technology and administrative jobs in Naperville are projected to be nearly 12 percent higher than the national average next year, according to a survey released by Robert Half International, a professional staffing firm.
The survey forecasted the top 10 most promising finance, information technology and administrative jobs for 2010, and listed national and local salary ranges.
"This is the first year the survey has included Naperville," said Andy Kegebien, branch manager for Accountemps in Naperville, a division of RHI. "We are very excited about that."
Kegebein gave a few tips for negotiating salaries:
"Right now, companies are having more flexibility with the pay structures of current personnel than with starting salaries," he said. "There is not a lot of room for negotiation with starting salaries right now."
He also said signing bonuses are a thing of the past.
"The days of large signing bonuses are far less common," Kegebein said. "We've seen a significant decrease."
Be careful when asking for a raise, he warned.
"If you are asking for a raise, and you've been around for a year or two, and your skill set is not necessarily in demand, it may not be the right time," he said. "It is also not the right time to ask for a raise if you work in a company that is struggling."
Instead of asking for more money, Kegebein suggests another approach.
"Ask for a compressed work week," he proposed. "Maybe work four days a week instead of five. Some companies are paying for days off and some are not. Either way, it helps with the cost of commuting. Just make sure to be flexible."
The salary survey is free and can be found at www.rhi.com.
