Public Comment for March 22, 2010 Board of Education Meeting
Presenting Views
District 204 residents are welcomed and encouraged to present their views to the Board. By hearing from the public, the Board is able to make better-informed decisions. We encourage you to submit your views regarding the 2010-11 budget proposal in writing at www.surveymonkey.com/s/QSGT52Q.
In order to provide the greatest opportunity for thoughtful reflection, members of the public are encouraged to present their views in writing and as early as possible.
Addressing the Board on the 2010-11 Budget
In addition to presenting views to the Board through the online feedback form, community members may address the Board in person at the March 22, 2010 meeting. Please note the following guidelines for public comment on March 22, 2010:
# Those wishing to address the Board must sign up at the desk outside the board room prior to 7:00 pm.
# On March 22, public comment will be received until 9:30 pm and will be limited to 1.5 minutes per person.
Public comment regarding the proposed budget will also be accepted on April 5, 2010 until 9:00 pm; however, please keep in mind that due to time constraints, residents will be asked to share their comments with the Board at either the March 22 or April 5 meeting, but not both meetings.
The Board is not anticipating making a final decision on next year’s budget until April 13, 2010 at the earliest.
When addressing the Board, please keep in mind the following practical guidelines:
Be respectful and productive – It is important that we all be good role models for students that attend board meetings. In addition, the purpose of public comment is to provide the Board with new information or to encourage a particular course of action. A disrespectful comment or tone would be counterproductive to that goal.
Be solution-oriented – All board members believe in education and do not take pleasure in reducing services to our students. Presenting solutions or alternatives for achieving a $21.4 million budget reduction, while also preserving a particular program, is much more useful than simply requesting that a particular program be spared.
Focus on the present and future – Comments should focus on the present and future.
Lastly, please remember that no public comment is allowed regarding school district personnel and students due to matters of confidentiality and safety.
Board Response
Public comment is one of several avenues available to the public to present its views to the Board. Citizens should be aware that public comment is not intended to be a question-and-answer period. Questions raised may require further investigation. Board members will respectfully listen to the public views and have asked the administration to follow-up to common questions in future presentations or FAQs.
