Oswego schools to buy land at Route 126, Grove Road
May 21, 2008
By HEATHER GILLERS hgillers@scn1.com OSWEGO -- Students someday will learn U.S. history, kids will recite their ABCs and administrators will crunch numbers at Route 126 and Grove Road in Plainfield.
The Oswego School Board voted this week to purchase a combined 145 acres at that location for approximately $7,175,000.
"We are fortunate that we will be able to purchase this property for less than what the School District spent during the past decade on previous school sites," School Superintendent David Behlow said.
Funding for the purchase will come from the $450 million voters approved in a 2006 building bond referendum.
District spokesman Kris Liptrot said the district will decide based on future growth how to use the land. Possibilities include a high school or other district schools or facilities, she said.
The land is split into two parcels, with one located on the northwest corner of Route 126 and Grove Road in Plainfield and the other on the northeast corner of the intersection, behind an existing farmhouse.

That's $49, 482.77/acre. Must be motivated sellers and no other influences driving up the price.

Oh, the amazingly simple life in Oswego. Imagine a place where voters vote for a new school with complete trust in the school board to pick a place after the voters have approved the money. Also imagine no lawsuits when people are unhappy with the chosen spot. Also amazing that this could be a spot for a third high school....they are planning ahead! All the other districts seem to accentuate smaller high schools. That may definitely be a selling point for buyers when considering cities in which to live. A smaller city like Oswego is already thinking about a possible need for a third HS. And people here say we don't need a third HS now. "Just cram 'em in like sardines...they'll be OK. Who cares that there is still vacant land out there that will be built on one day. My kid will survive.....as long as he/she gets to go to NV, who cares if they have to be in moldy trailers."
